boat to go / boat to come back
This series traces the liminal space of crossing—the daily commuting by ferry between Lisbon and Barreiro, the departure and return. At first, the repetition numbed me: the shudder of the engine, the salt-stained windows, the way the city’s glow receded as the industrial outskirts yawned ahead. But in time, the monotony cracked open. The commute became a metaphor.
These images are not just documents of transit, but fragments of a suspended state—between home and exile, presence and absence, the luminous and the vacant. They ask: What does it mean to leave, even temporarily? To sever oneself from one landscape and enter another, over and over, until neither feels entirely whole?
For nine years, I have lived away from my hometown; for seven, adrift from my country. The ferry, with its relentless back-and-forth, became an echo of this displacement—a mechanical heartbeat measuring the distance between where we are and where we long to be. The water, indifferent, carries us anyway.
